I haven't put up a new post since the end of last year. Been busy with some other stuff. I am anxious to start writing again although I won't be able to post as frequently as I have in the past. Still, I hope to post at least weekly.
So a good topic to start back up on is the death of Spiralfrog. No surprise here, I predicted it over a year ago.
To those who ask if this heralds the end of the ad-supported downloaded music industry, I say no it does not.
Apart from serious execution problems, the managers of Spiralfrog failed to understand that the only ad-supported downloaded music business model that will work is one that sells the TSL to the acquired music.
Spiralfrog hoped to sell the TSL to the website from which the music was downloaded. That is like television networks trying to make their money by selling advertising aimed at consumers only when they are buying a television at BestBuy.
Ad-supported downloaded music is a viable industry but the market is such that the only viable business model is to sell the TSL.
